Dear RiverGrace Family,
I hope you all survived the 'big blow" on Wednesday unscathed, when Severe Typhoon Hato struck Hong Kong. Unfortunately, we had to cancel the morning and evening Connect Groups due to the #8 and #10 signals going up..
As we are working through some of the details of our goal to become independent, in a way we are needing to "invent the wheel," so to speak. There are procedures necessary for RiverGrace that other churches do not have to deal with simply because of the international mix of people in our church. One of those issues is about who qualifies to be a member. This has nothing to do with race, culture or language, but with HKEC's own policies of connecting baptism directly to baptism. Their policies are clear and work for Hong Kong, but RiverGrace brings different issues into play just because of the nature of those who attend our church.
When we were under Yan Yue we were not an official church, and we did not really emphasize membership. Now as we're in the process of becoming independent we have to deal with them.
One of the items I shared in last week's message was about the different categories of the member's status, and who qualified for membership. I will not repeat those categories here, but there was one, possibly two categories that we need to add to the mix.
Some of our Filipinas were baptized in a church here in Hong Kong that was not officially registered as a church. That was true on the Filipino church, Faith Fellowship, that was under OMS and not HKEC in past years. There was no formal membership in the church, but a several of the Filpinas that are now attending RiverGrace were baptized in that church. So we are working with that category as well. In any case, we will need everyone to fill out a form if you desire to be members of RiverGrace. We will make a more official database for our own records with the information you submit. Thanks for your patience as we work through these issues!
On Sunday, Cindy will be continuing her Ephesians series, this time from chapter 4:1-16.
The passage looks at WALKING our TALK. If we live by the principles we learned in Ephesians chapters 1-3, what would that look like practically in our lives? Paul begins to get specific on what it means to live out our identity as God’s people. The title of the sermon is "Unity and Maturity: Growing Up Together."
Still will lead the worship songs. Being the last Sunday in August, we will also celebrate August birthdays.
Our Wednesday AM and PM fellowships will meet on August 30th. Since Typhoon Hato meant that we did not have the our Connect Groups yesterday, including Spanish Fellowship, they will meet on the this coming Wednesday the 30th instead.
