Dear RG Family,
Greetings from Da Nang, Vietnam, where we are for a few days to attend our organization's annual retreat. It is a nice location and cooler than I expected... which I don't mind at all! It's still warm enough to swim in the ocean. We're just a couple blocks from the beach. We'll have meetings all week starting on Sunday when the rest of our colleagues arrive.
As we near Chinese New Year, the Chinese tradition is to use the occasion to do an annual, thorough cleaning of their houses in preparation. They even go to the extent of throwing away their old brooms after the cleaning, representing leaving the old year behind and having a fresh beginning to the New Year.
Perhaps there's some dirt and bad habits that we need to leave behind as we face the new year, with a cleaning job on the inside. How do we do when it comes to that? P. Tommy will be preaching on "Cleaning Inside Out" from Psalm 16. If you have a chance, please read the chapter before Sunday.
Michael will lead the worship in singing and there will be the regular fellowship lunch after the service. There are no scheduled activities for the afternoon.
Here's a reminder that next Sunday, Jan. 29, we'll have guests from the Jin Wah Foundation who will take part with us by singing or giving testimony in the service. In the afternoon, we will show the movie of the month. It is called "The Good Lie". You can watch the film trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2X1zZIGtmE.
On Monday, Jan 30th, Day 3 of Chinese New Year, we will have a hike to Amah's rock near Lion Rock. Please meet at the Tai Wai MTR station Exit A (inside the turnstiles) at 9:30am if you'd like to join. Also please bring along your own picnic lunch... whatever you'd like to eat. As it is a holiday and many people may be out, it may be difficult to find a BBQ site in that area. Also there's a worry about monkeys, so it's risky to be in a set location. If we have picnic food it's much easier to move to another location to eat without the monkeys coming for your food. They like to eat too.
It's said that the monkeys prefer Parknshop to Wellcome, so please don't bring your food in Parknshop bags. (Sorry, that's only a bad joke!) But it is true, that if you see monkeys close by, don't take any food out of your bag, or eat anything. They will come after the food.
Again... February 12th is the HKEC anniversary joint worship service. There will be no service at RiverGrace that Day. We will join the 20 other HKEC churches for a time of worship and celebration. If you have not signed up, please do so by this coming Sunday or inform one of the pastors that you want to go. We will plan to eat lunch at a local restaurant somewhere in Mongkok after the celebration.
