RiverGrace Weekly Newsletter
June 2, 2016
June 20, 2016 is world Refugee Day. Hong Kong is now home to some 11,000 asylum seekers and refugees. When RiverGrace started only 5 years ago, they were saying the number was about 6,000.
They come for many different reasons... fleeing civil or tribal warfare, government repression, ending up on the wrong political side of the powers that be in the government, and religious persecution from other religions, or even family members. Some are here having been caught up in human trafficking, or, perhaps coming on the false promises of being able to get a good job. Some are torture claimants. And yes, some are here simply looking for a better life.
However, life is not easy for them, nor any asylum seekers or refugees in our world. The number of refugees has multiplied in recent years because of people fleeing wars or trouble spots.
In RiverGrace, we are privileged to work with several asylum seekers and refugees. They have enriched our church culturally and spiritually.
The Bible says that we, as Christians, are aliens in this world in which we live. According to the "Faith Chapter", Hebrews 11, the great people of the Bible all realized that fact. From the time of Jesus many people have realized it also, and have payed the ultimate price of martyrdom because they would not give allegiance to anyone but God.
This Sunday we will have a concerts of prayer with an emphasis on praying for asylum seekers and refugees. I hope you can join us for this time of sharing, worship and prayer. Rita will lead the worship songs. Our service starts at 12:00, and a simple lunch will follow the service.
There are no activities scheduled for the afternoon.
On June 9th you are invited to Pastor Dave's house in Sai Kung for some fun and fellowship. Depending on the weather we may have a hike, BBQ, or you may bring along your swim suits and towels for a swim at the nearby beach. I suggest that there be two meeting points. I will ask someone that knows the way to lead the groups to Sai Kung. My suggestion for the first meeting point would be for anyone living in Kowloon, Hong Kong or outlying islands to meet at the Choi Hung MTR exit C at 9:30am. For those living in the New Territories, I'd suggest that you meet at the University Station of the MTR and take the 99X bus from there around the same time. We can give more specific instructions on Sunday. We would like you to sign up on the sheet if you plan to attend so that we can prepare enough food. In terms of the food, we'll do as we do for Sunday lunch, and make it a free will donation.
